Gorgons are a possible evolution of Infected Witches, belonging in the Evolved tier.
Spawning
Spawned when an Infected Witch gets an evolution point by killing a mob and its evolution timer begins. If the evolution succeeds, they have a 30% chance to become a Gorgon.
Spawned from Vigils during the second and third waves of a Vigil raid.
Unique Behavior
Gorgons will build up 0.1 'toxin points' every 5 ticks. They can have a maximum of 10.1 toxin points. For every toxin point gained, the sac on a Gorgon's back will increase in size by 0.05. When a Gorgon has at least 6 toxin points, she will be capable of shooting her spore beam.
They can only shoot their beams if they have a line of sight to their targets. When first hitting a target, a spore beam will inflict Blindness for 4 seconds, Slowness III for 20 seconds, and Mycelium Infection II for 20 seconds. Spore beams will deal 2 damage (x1 heart) to the target every second while the beam is active. While a Gorgon is shooting her beam, 0.1 toxin points are drained every tick; this continues until the toxin points reach 0, in which the Gorgon stops shooting. Its sac also decreases in size. Gas Masks will stop the Mycelium Infection given by the beam, but not any of the other effects.
If a Gorgon is incapable of shooting a beam, she will attempt to deal regular melee damage to her target.
The Gorgon has very high knockback, with a value of 2 for knockback.
If a targettable mob is in water, Gorgons will not be able to detect it, nor have a line of sight (meaning they can't use their beam attack against targets in water).
Behavior
Gorgons are melee combatants and ranged combatants, attacking mobs with Infected forms, golems, and most hostile mobs.
Gorgons inflict Mycelium Infection for 30 seconds when dealing melee damage.
Has a follow range of 32 blocks.
Gorgons have a 5% chance to drop a Scent upon death.
When killed, have a chance to place a small short-lived Mycelium Infection area effect cloud.
Gorgons will attempt to group together in hordes with other Evolved.
Infected will follow Gorgons, who themselves will follow Hyper Evolved and Calamities.
Can perform low leaps/dashes to chase prey quickly through water.
Able to use kill points to give themselves buffs, such as strength or speed if the target is running away. They can also give themselves regeneration if they are low on health.
Capable of breaking glass and leaves.
Have a damage cap of 1/3 of their health on hard mode.
Present a weakness to the cold, like all spore mobs.

Lore
Due to Gorgons not having any eyes, they cannot see but instead are able to smell their targets. This is also why they cannot sense targets in water; they can't smell them.

Trivia
The Gorgon is a suggested mob, coming from the mind of @bigxplosion in the Spore Asylum Discord server.
Gorgons are based on the gorgon mythological creature originating from Greek mythology.
They are the only Infected Witch evolution that are incapable of buffing themselves with effects.
The Gorgon has gone through four different models, one by a staff member, Wiki, in early 2025, another by a contributor, Blurathus, in mid 2025, then it was attempted again by Wiki in early 2026, and the official finale model created by Flesh and textured by Slasher in early 2026.
The third model (second made by Wiki) is generally preferred by most players, design wise. However, this model doesn't fit the concept of the Gorgon. It's too slim and isn't stocky enough to hold itself in place while shooting its beam. Furthermore, it's too mangled to be alive. This is why it wasn't used.
The Gorgon's spore beam attack is neutralized by shields and line of sight; this is actually how Perseus was able to kill Medusa in Greek mythology.
