The fungus that would eventually become the Spore simply started off as research, done by a company named Genesis Labs, into gene editing of some fungus, without any apparent goal. During these tests, they attempted to get the fungus to grow in several different mediums, such as flesh, and once that succeeded, they continued research in this direction to see, with some such examples being a way to repurpose parts of animals that are often discarded. These tests also revealed an affinity for human flesh, discovered in a cross-culture comparison, and it was discovered that the fungus had developed a very crude form of host repurposing, which involved dissolving the bones of the tissue samples and reforming the calcium complex elsewhere for structural support, which unsettled the funding government.
