The laboratory section in National Vterinary Hospital serves as one of the most crucial unit to perform confirmatory diagnosis. During our field attachment period, we were attached mainly to the biochemistry and haematology laboratory, while also being introduced to parasitology, and cytology, highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of veterinary diagnostics.
The parasitology section facilitates microscopic evaluation of skin scrapings of the suspected dermatological conditions for confirmatory diagnosis uding digestion method. Skin scrap samples are observed under the microscope (10x) using 10% KOH solution and kept still for 10 minutes. To ensure the reliability, the test is conducted in triplicate and a positive result in any of the three tests was considered positive for the suspected dermatological condition.
During our routine, we observed sarcoptes scabiei in one of the tests so the test was considered positive of scabies.
