Strangulation by a thread.

A canine patient was presented with a cervical laceration around the neck caused by prolonged strangulation with a thread. In this case the threat caused a deep linear laceration around the neck but fortunately no major vascular rupture and respiratory distress was observed during the clinical presentation. Otherwise strangulation injuries are cosidered conserning due to possiblitilies of potential airway obstruction that can lead to systemic failure and sudden death. 

Initial treatment and management involved assessment and stabilization of vital parameters like respiratory rate,heart rate, colour of the mucous membrane, capillary refill time and the temperature. The patient was then prepared for suturing under proper sedation and asceptic conditions.

The neck region was shaved,cleaned and disinfected with chlorehexidine, irrigated with normal saline and sutured using nylon 2-0. The suture pattern that was applied was simple interuptted with the knot away from the lacerated line for better healing and prevention of post-operative complications.

Post-operative therapy involved administration of NSAIDs to control pain and inflammation, antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections.

Advice to the owner: E-collar to prevent self-trauma

The doctor also adviced the owner to visit for regular routine check ups and recommended to closely monitor the pet before the complete healing of the wound.
