Dental scaling is a prophylactic procedure where tooth plaque(bacterial biofilm accumulating on the teeth after food intake) and calculus deposists are removed to prevent periodontal diseases. If the plaque is not removed regularly, it mineralizes into calculus that can lead to gingivitus, halitosis and gradually cause the destruction of the periodontal structures.
Periodontal disease is a clinical condition that occurs mostly in companion animals like dogs and cats. If the condition is left untreated, it can lead to loss of tooth and systemic infections that can affect the quality of life.
The procedure is performed under anaesthesia to ensure proper and thorough cleaning of the tooth. The procedure begins with a general examination of the oral cavity to check for oral lesions and assess dental diseases. Instrument used during the process was ultrasonic scaler that removes the calculus with its high frequency vibrations and flushing the debris with water simultaneously. The procedure requires knowledge of oral anatomy along with experience in handling of the equipments and standard asceptic techniques.
