Eclampsia

On 23rd December, 2025,  at 3:05pm a female dog was admitted with severe hypocalcemia/eclampsia(drop in blood calcium during lactation). The animal presents symptoms of hypocalcemia like muscle tremors, severe weakness, secretion of excess mucus from the mouth, hyperthermia/increase in body temperature(106°F) due to excessive muscle tremors. The case was attended by Dr.Tshogyel Lhamo and Dr. Tenzin Wangchuk assisted by all the interns. 

Treatment and management strategy includes immediate fluid therapy(Normal Saline), administration of calcium borogluconate @5ml subcutaneously and srubbed the animal with cold water to facilitate external cooling. After 10 minutes the temperature dropped to 101.5°F and the animal returned to its normal state. 

Conclusion drawn from attending the case was,  if we ever encounter such cases in lactating animals, immediate medical intervention is neccessary because excessive calcium deficit in the blood could directly lead to the sudden death of the animal and from our observations till date, every owner admits their pets only when the animal is in critical stage so we'd like to recommend every pet owners to monitor for signs and symptoms of diseases in their pet and meticuluously follow regular routine health check ups.
