On 31st January we attended a case of dystocia in a female dog. It is defined as the difficulty to deliver puppies through the birth canal. the common causes of this condition is uterine inertia(weak contractions), abnormal fetus position and narrow pelvis. 

Upon examination by the paraveterinarian on duty, there was no abnormalities with the birthcanal and the cause of dystocia was due to primigravid(first time getting pregnant). The clinical presentation of the patient includes slow panting, straining and restlessness. Oxytoxin was administered to initiate birth but due to nervousness, the dam couldnt deliver the puppies even after several attempts. 

The attending nurse tried performing manual vaginal examination and assisted birthing but since the patient was aggressive, the attempts failed so the nurse adviced the owner to try keeping it at home and make her deliver the puppies normally. If any complication arises the owner was adviced to immediately admit the dog to the hospital. The case reminded us of the difficulty of handling aggresive animals in emergency cases.
