Bite wound case

On 13th December,2025 at around 9:31 pm, an adult dog was admitted into the inpatient ward as an emergency case of bite wounds. On presentation, the patient was depressive but was also responsive with reluctance to move and pain. On physical examination, multiple punctured wounds and a large open lesion on the abdominal region was observed. The wound showed hemorrhage and tssue devitalisation.

Immediate treatment and management includes stabilization with fluid therapy, disinfection of the wounds and monitoring of vital parameters. Following the evaluation, the open lesion was disinfected and necrose tissues were debrided. The procedure was done under general anesthesia and since the wound was deep, the attending veterinary nurse closed the wound in two layers following strict asceptic techniques. 

The sutured wound was then disinfected with concentrated povidone iodine and antibiotic ointments were applied. The patient was adviced to visit for follow up check ups and the owner was adviced to monitor the animal carefully before the complete healing of wound.

Post-operative therapy includes fluid therapy, administration of analgesic drugs and antibiotics. Gradually the animal returned to its normal physiological state. The case reinforced the importance of timely veterinary intervention in emergency situations. Assisting and contributing to the treatment of the patient enhanced my knowledge in how prfessionally challenging and rewarding it is to be the part of team that worked decisively to save the life of the animal. 

The experience deepened my respect to all the veterinary health workers and strengthened my dedication to learn more about the veterinary care.
