My name is Pema Choden, and I am currently a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science at the College of Natural Resources (CNR). I completed my higher secondary education at Mendrelgang Central School under Tsirang Dzongkhag, where my interest in biological sciences and animal health began to take shape.
Recently, I successfully completed a two-month internship at the National Veterinary Hospital, an experience that significantly strengthened my academic foundation through extensive hands-on clinical exposure. During this period, I actively participated in a wide range of veterinary procedures, assisted in diagnostic and surgical cases, observed case management practices, and developed a deeper understanding of animal healthcare systems.
A brief Overview of the institution that transformed me, shaping me into a different version of myself within just two month!
National Veterinary Hospital serves as the ultimate referral centre for complicated, severe and critical animal cases across the country. The Hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic technologies with well structured clinical and surgical theaters that operates in a 24-7 hour basis providing immediate healthcare services. My internship at National Veterinary Hospital was not merely a field attachment placement, it was the immersion into the highest standard of veterinary practice in the country. The two month internship at National Veterinary hospital equipped me with skills and knowledges, hands-on practical exposure and experiences far beyound my initial expectations.

Radiography
During the field attachment period, I observed the pivotal role of radiography in a clinical veterinary setting. It provides non-invasive visualization of internal structures, enabling accurate diagnosis of fractures, osteomyelitis, neoplasms, thoracoabdominal abnormalities, uroliths, and foreign bodies. I also saw its application in surgical planning, post-operative assessment, dental evaluation, and screening for hereditary conditions like hip dysplasia, underscoring its value in precise diagnosis and optimal patient management.
Erba clinical chemistry analyzer
The machine allows rapid and precise assessment of biochemical parameters, including hepatic and renal function, glucose, total proteins, and electrolytes. Its efficiency and accuracy make it an essential tool for timely diagnosis, monitoring disease progression, and guiding therapeutic interventions to ensure optimal patient care.
Centrifuge
We also had the opportunity to observe the use of a centrifuge machine, which is essential for separating blood components. It efficiently isolates serum or plasma from whole blood, allowing accurate biochemical and hematological analysis. This process is crucial for timely diagnosis, monitoring disease progression, and guiding treatment in veterinary patients.
Gaseous Anesthetic Machine
The machine is a vital tool for administering inhalation anesthesia safely in veterinary patients. It delivers precise concentrations of anesthetic gases, ensuring controlled sedation and analgesia during surgical procedures. The machine’s monitoring capabilities help maintain stable vital parameters, making it essential for safe anesthesia management and optimal patient care.
Dental Scaler
An essential instrument for veterinary dental care. It efficiently removes plaque and calculus from teeth, helping prevent periodontal disease and maintain oral health. Proper use of the scaler supports overall patient wellbeing and is a key component of routine dental maintenance in animals.
OT light
Operation theater lights were utilized during surgery. It provides bright, focused, and shadow-free illumination of the surgical site, allowing veterinarians to perform procedures with precision and safety. Proper lighting is essential for accurate tissue visualization, reducing errors, and ensuring optimal surgical outcomes.
Autoclave
Autoclave is an essential device for sterilizing surgical instruments, drapes, and other equipment. By using high-pressure saturated steam, it effectively eliminates all microorganisms, ensuring a sterile surgical environment. Proper sterilization with an autoclave is critical for preventing infections and ensuring safe, successful surgical outcomes in veterinary patients.
Bone Plate Instrument
Vital tools in veterinary orthopedic surgery. These instruments are used to apply and secure bone plates and screws for fracture fixation, ensuring proper alignment and stabilization of broken bones. Accurate handling of bone plate instruments is critical for promoting effective bone healing and restoring normal limb function in patients.
Ultrasonography
A key diagnostic tool in veterinary medicine. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs, tissues, and fluid-filled structures. I saw it being used to evaluate abdominal organs, detect pregnancies, assess soft tissue injuries, and guide minimally invasive procedures. Ultrasonography is invaluable for providing non-invasive, accurate, and immediate diagnostic information, supporting effective treatment and patient care.
Electrocautery Machine
A surgical device that uses electric current to cut tissue and control bleeding simultaneously. It allows precise incision with minimal blood loss, reducing surgical time and improving visibility at the operative site. During our attachmentg we observed that the device is most frquently used to incise the tumors. Electrocautery is highly valuable in veterinary surgery for safe, efficient, and controlled tissue management, contributing to better surgical outcomes.
Endotracheal Tube
Endotracheal tube is used for administering gaseous anesthesia in veterinary patients. The tube ensures a secure airway, allowing precise delivery of anesthetic gases and oxygen directly to the lungs while preventing aspiration. Proper placement and use of the endotracheal tube are critical for maintaining airway safety, effective anesthesia, and stable vital signs during surgical procedures. Therefore, during our placement in the OT, the methods for correct placement of ET tube were practically demonstrated repeatedly by the doctors before the procedure.
