Esteemed Council Members,
A new traveler came to the guild looking for a friend. He was a darker skinned elf unlike any we'd ever seen. His name is Rolen. He is native to this land and comes from a cavern system to the south. He has familiarity with the area, so we felt he'd be beneficial on our next mission. Brundell Westcott agreed. A party was needed to escort Mortimer Wells back to the newly discovered tower, along with a team of surveyors, craftsmen and laborers.
Manawa, Novad, Chillax, Amabel and Rolen would be that party. The first day's travel was uneventful until we began setting up camp. Trouble seems to find us then for some reason. Several of the “suffocating bat-like creatures” that we'd encountered before attacked the camp. They created darkness again, making the battle more difficult. Our new “guide” Rolen barely escaped death. Fortunately we were able to defeat them. The rest of the night was as peaceful as could be expected.
The next day's travels found more peril. The ground opened up in front of our small caravan, engulfing the oxen and partially swallowing the wagon in it's sinkhole. Our great cook Selma was throne prone from the wagon, but the driver and Mortimer were able to safely jump off. A monstrous creature then burst out the ground behind the wagon, much as a massive fish might jump out of the sea. This giant “land shark” looked to have natural armor much like an armadillo, but the massive mouth of a snapping turtle. It landed on Amabel, knocking her prone. Despite its armor, we were able to inflict quite a bit of damage on it quickly. Amabel escaped while the creature attacked Manawa. It then burrowed back into the ground. Moments later the oxen fell silent. We assumed the creature had its fill when it didn't return. One oxen had been half eaten and the other was gone. The orc laborers began earning their pay earlier than expected as they now had a heavy load to bear. I've included a sketch of this "land shark". Extreme caution should be used if it is encountered.
The remainder of the travel to the tower was uneventful. Once there, we began repairs and enclosing the structure. What appeared to be ruins to the south could be seen from the top of the tower. We estimate it is a half day's ride. Perhaps this should be further investigated as we continue to explore the area to make sure it is safe.
Fraternally,
Journeyman Chillax Qualinflow
