As we get older, our physical and mental health begin to deteriorate and our need for safe outdoor spaces becomes more important. Research has proven that spending time outdoors not only helps seniors stay active and socialize with their friends, but it also stimulates brain activity through different colors and textures in plants. Other known benefits of seniors spending time outside are noted as a decreases in risks like dementia, stress, and anxiety. By using key design aspects, as designers we can create spaces to improve the quality of life of older generations.
Research suggests that landscapes can help seniors in many ways:
Studies show that therapeutic gardens and garden settings help seniors by reducing stress, alleviating pain, improving attention, and lowering the need for medication (Detweiler). Research on garden therapy highlights how engaging with plants and nature positively affects the mind, body, and soul, leading to enhanced overall well-being (Turovtseva). Therapeutic gardens often incorporate elements such as sensory plants, water features, and shaded seating areas to provide a calming and restorative environment. These spaces can promote physical activity, social interaction, and cognitive stimulation, all of which are essential for maintaining health and quality of life in elderly populations.
For successful design of senior landscapes, we identified three important considerations:
The following case studies illustrate two examples of outdoor spaces designed to support elderly patients. These examples vary in size and focus (one is designed for physical rehabilitation, while the other focuses largely on mental health support), but still overlap in programming and physical design elements. These two examples of garden spaces can help us to develop a holistic approach to elder care through therapeutic gardens and healing landscapes.
