Summary: The tunnel survivability capstone seeks to improve our understanding of what makes underground structures fail when exposed to ground-shock loading, and how to make these structures more survivable. This year, the team was challenged to numerically model the 1964 Operation Snowball project 3.2 experiment, and then design solutions to increase the survivability of the buried structures in the project. The objectives were to understand the problem by assessing the current state of practice and research in blast mechanics, ground-shock theory and modeling, tunnel design, and other pertinent topics, acquire technical expertise in static and dynamic finite-element modeling software, create calibrated models, design potential survivability improvements, and present conclusions.
