Summary: The Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP) needs to optimize the efficiency of transporting inert supplies from a vertical warehouse environment to other buildings, including the production facility. WAR is designing the process and robots in parallel, whereby a system of robots coordinates the transportation of materials within and between factories. The team takes a modular approach to building robots, carefully designing each robot and its task, as cogs in the greater system process. Each robot conducts its own real-time planning, given only task priorities from a higher, centralized system. Deconfliction is decentralized, occurring at the robot-to-robot level. Together, WAR’s army of robots accomplish goals, autonomously, as a system of robotic systems.
