Summary: This capstone team seeks to develop novel materials and designs of a live fire shoot house training ammunitions for the next generation squad weapon. The need for training ammunition stems from damage to live fire shoot houses observed when training using the 5.56mm Enhanced Performance Round, producing significant safety risks to Soldiers. Given the Army’s intent to move to an intermediate caliber round, there is a need for training projectiles that can be safely used in close quarters training at higher velocities. This project seeks to explore materials and designs that will decrease the risk to Soldiers using live fire facilities, while providing an identical experience to the firer as a combat projectile. Important considerations for this project include minimizing facility damage and failure, minimizing cost of production, environmental and health impacts of materials used, long term storage, and production capability.
