Sustainable Cities
Sustainable Cities
BMC has extended its commitment to SDG11, which aims to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities. BMC's dedication to fostering sustainable urban development is multi-aspects, involving educational accessibility, environmental health, and community engagement, all of which contribute to the broader goal of sustainable urban living.
Educational Accessibility and Urban Development
A key pillar of BMC’s contribution to sustainable cities is its focus on enhancing educational accessibility. BMC offers a range of medical and health-related programs to students from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that higher education is accessible to all. By providing these opportunities, the institution is building a skilled workforce that will play a critical role in the sustainable development of cities. The presence of a well-trained healthcare workforce not only strengthens the urban health infrastructure but also contributes to the overall well-being of urban populations.
BMC’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond admissions. The institution provides scholarships and financial aid to ensure that economic barriers do not prevent talented students from pursuing their education. By empowering individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds, BMC contributes to the development of more equitable and inclusive urban communities.
Health and Safety Protocols
BMC recognizes that urban sustainability begins with creating a safe and secure learning environment. The institution has implemented strict health and safety protocols across its campus to protect students, faculty, and
staff. These measures, which include disaster preparedness training and health awareness programs, reflect BMC's proactive approach to disaster risk reduction and urban safety. Through these initiatives, BMC equips its community with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to emergencies, contributing to the resilience of urban areas.
Research and Community Engagement
BMC is actively involved in research initiatives aimed at addressing urban sustainability challenges. The college encourages research on urban health issues, environmental sustainability, and innovative solutions to urban challenges. By fostering an environment of academic inquiry and collaboration, BMC contributes to the generation of knowledge that can be applied to improve urban living conditions.
Beyond research, BMC engages with the local community through health campaigns, awareness programs, and volunteer activities. In 2023, for example, BMC organized the Green Jeddah Planting Initiative in collaboration with the Municipality of Jeddah. This event saw the participation of over 100 students, who planted 250 seedlings at Alsoror Public Park. Such initiatives not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also foster a sense of social responsibility and community involvement among students.
In addition, BMC celebrated World Soil Day in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, where students planted seedlings, contributing to urban greenery and raising awareness about soil conservation. These activities align with BMC’s goal of fostering urban environments that are both sustainable and resilient, highlighting the importance of community involvement in achieving these goals.
Addressing Plastic Pollution and Urban Cleanliness
One of BMC's standout 2024 initiatives involved tackling plastic pollution, particularly in marine environments. BMC nursing students actively participated in underwater and beach clean-up efforts, contributing to the cleanliness and preservation of local ecosystems. These activities reduced waste and raised public awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution, which aligns with urban sustainability goals. By collaborating with external partners like the Jeddah Municipality, BMC emphasized community-driven actions for a cleaner urban environment.
Environmental Sustainability on Campus
BMC takes its environmental responsibility seriously, implementing a variety of green practices on its campus to reduce its environmental footprint. These practices include energy-efficient buildings, waste reduction initiatives, and efforts to enhance group transportation for students and staff. By promoting these sustainable practices, BMC is setting a positive example for its community and encouraging environmentally responsible behavior.
One of BMC's significant environmental initiatives includes addressing the issue of plastic pollution, particularly in marine environments. In 2024, BMC’s nursing students participated in underwater cleanup events and beach clean-up activities, directly contributing to the preservation of marine ecosystems. These initiatives not only helped reduce waste but also played a crucial role in raising public awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution.
Sustainability Celebrations and Events
BMC consistently incorporates sustainability into its cultural and community events. On Saudi National Day, the college organized a planting event in collaboration with the Municipality of Jeddah. Around 100 students participated in this event, planting 250 seedlings, contributing to urban greening and environmental awareness. BMC also hosted its Founding Day Planting Initiative in February 2024, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture and other partners. This event saw the planting of 1,139 sprouts, further demonstrating BMC’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
These initiatives emphasize the college’s active participation in promoting urban sustainability and its commitment to SDG11. By encouraging students and faculty to engage in sustainability practices, BMC fosters a culture of environmental stewardship that extends beyond the classroom.
