Reduced Inequalities
BMC's Dedication to Equity and Inclusion
BMC has a deep commitment to reducing inequalities and advancing an inclusive environment for its community, in alignment with SDG10. This commitment is evident in its diverse and multicultural environment, inclusive policies, and various initiatives that support marginalized groups. By focusing on empowering individuals from different backgrounds, BMC aims to create an academic space where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed, regardless of their socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, or disability.
Promoting Inclusiveness and Diversity at BMC
BMC's diverse community reflects its core belief in inclusiveness. With students, faculty, and staff of 38 different nationalities, the college promotes a multicultural and comprehensive environment that fosters mutual respect, learning, and collaboration. This diversity goes beyond nationality, encompassing a broad spectrum of backgrounds, including differences in ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, gender, and disability. The value of this multicultural environment not only enhances the educational experience but also prepares students to engage effectively in an increasingly interconnected world.
BMC's policies are built around creating a safe and inclusive space for everyone. The institution is committed to protecting all individuals including, students, staff, and faculty, against any form of bias or discrimination, whether based on gender, race, ethnicity, or other factors. These policies are accompanied by proactive measures aimed at ensuring a supportive and equal learning environment. This commitment is reflected in the college’s actions to ensure every member of the BMC community feels valued and respected.
To promote inclusiveness, BMC offers numerous platforms for cultural exchange and learning, providing students and staff with the opportunity to share their unique perspectives and experiences. This dynamic exchange of ideas and experiences enriches the academic atmosphere and contributes to cultural understanding, thereby reducing inequalities and promoting peace within the campus community.
Promoting Gender Equality and Empowering Women
Gender equality is a cornerstone of BMC’s mission to reduce inequalities. The college actively supports the advancement of women in academic, professional, and leadership roles. This is reflected in BMC’s leadership, where a significant proportion of senior academic staff are women. BMC continues to ensure that women have equal opportunities.
BMC's commitment to empowering women extends to its student body as well. Through scholarships, mentoring programs, and financial aid, the institution encourages female students, especially those from disadvantaged or marginalized backgrounds, to pursue higher education. First-generation female students benefit from this support through their education journey. In 2024, about 389 female students were enrolled in their first degree at BMC, with more than 70% of them being first-generation students. This demonstrates the college’s proactive approach to empowering women and providing them with the tools to succeed.
BMC's Women Empowerment Club is a key part of its efforts to promote gender equality. The club focuses on addressing issues related to gender inequality and serves as a platform for female students to develop leadership skills, stimulate inner strength, and drive change. The club's activities inspire women to take on leadership roles and contribute positively to society.
Supporting Marginalized Groups and Persons with Disabilities
BMC is committed to reducing inequalities by supporting marginalized groups, particularly persons with disabilities. The college works to create an environment that is inclusive and accessible to all, ensuring that students with disabilities have the same opportunities as their peers. In 2024, BMC continued its efforts to support students with disabilities by providing them with access to assistive technologies, academic accommodation, and tailored support services.
BMC’s Occupational Therapy Program plays a significant role in promoting inclusivity and support for persons with disabilities. One notable event in 2024 was "Empowering Voices of Persons with Disabilities", organized in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This event highlighted the experiences, achievements, and challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, providing them with a platform to share their stories and advocate for their rights. It also demonstrated the essential role of occupational therapy in promoting inclusivity and improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Assistive technology exhibits, led by occupational therapy students, showcased practical solutions to enhance accessibility and provide support to those in need.
BMC’s commitment to inclusivity goes beyond its own campus. The college actively collaborates with associations such as the Saudi Association for Hearing Impairment and the Saudi Society for Parents of People with Disabilities. These collaborations strengthen the network of support and advocacy for individuals with disabilities, both within the college and in the broader community.
Community Engagement and Reducing Inequalities
Community engagement is another key area where BMC contributes to reducing inequalities. The college’s Social Responsibility Unit organizes numerous initiatives that aim to support marginalized groups and promote social justice. Through volunteer activities, awareness campaigns, and partnerships with local organizations, BMC students and staff actively engage with underrepresented communities to address inequalities and promote inclusiveness.
One of BMC’s most significant community engagement activities is its involvement in events that raise awareness about inequality and social responsibility. These include the International Volunteer Day walkathon, the Orphanage Visit, and the Founding Day Bazar, which raise funds and provide support to underprivileged groups. By participating in these events, BMC helps create a sense of solidarity and collective responsibility for reducing social and economic disparities.
BMC also addresses gender-based inequalities through events like Saudi Marriage Day, which focuses on public health issues related to premarital screening and reproductive health. These events help break down systemic barriers and promote gender equality, furthering the college’s goal of creating a more just and inclusive society.
Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment
Inclusiveness at BMC is an integral part of the institution’s approach to education. The college actively works to ensure that its academic programs are accessible to all students, regardless of their background or abilities. BMC’s inclusive policies are reflected in its curriculum, campus infrastructure, and support services, all of which are designed to create an environment where every student can succeed.
Through initiatives such as the Occupational Therapy Program’s public events and the college’s collaboration with various disability advocacy groups, BMC is making strides in promoting inclusivity and reducing inequalities in education and healthcare. These efforts not only enhance the educational experience for students but also contribute to a more inclusive society
