Your new dance partner?
As I came across Sanne Dekker's post about dancing bots, it immediately caught my interest. Not only because I love to express myself by dancing in various ways but also because my roommate is currently on tour with a show that includes drones that interact with the dancers on stage. In Sanne's description, she formulates dancing as a form of non-verbal communication and self-expression. I can relate to this description when dancing alone or with a dance partner. One thing that I love to do is ecstatic dance. This allows me to connect with myself and express myself and consequently connect with other people as well in a non-verbal way. Last year, I followed multiple tango lessons, where you have to rely on your dance partner to dance. You have to feel the connection between two bodies and only then, as you lean a little bit forward to one another, you can start to move synchronically without learned dance passes.
In Sanne's description, she also talks about dancing as a form of entertainment for the public. Either in social events or in shows. I can relate to this as well as I love to see dance performances, such as ballet, modern and in combination with technology. In the examples from Sanne, the robot is dancing by itself. But I am also very interested in the co-dancing between bots/technology and humans. In the following example, I will describe the show of my roommate as a form of entertainment where humans are dancing with bots. After that, I will come up with some hypothetical work that allows oneself to connect with a non-human dance partner.
Digital twin
In the show "Digital Twin", produced by Another Kind of Blue, dancers are co-dancing with drones. This co-dancing illustrates the twin relationship that humans have with technology - i.e. your digital twin copy with all your collected data in it. As humans, we think that we control this data. But what if was the other way around? Maybe humans are being influenced by their data. In this show, these worlds and interactions are being investigated.
This performance shows that technology can enhance dance performances by humans. Because technology is all around us, we must become aware of the consequences of this. By showing the relationship between the physical and digital world - with technology, it becomes more real and makes you wonder about your relationship with technology.
