The Funny Man's Wake

No one cared to attend

Even less to be late

To go pay their respects

At the funny man’s wake

He was destined for fortune

He was destined for fame

Said the people who knew

Of the funny man’s name

He would always make jokes

He could light up a room

Who would ever have thought

He would leave us so soon

It was so unexpected

It came out of the blue

Not a single one noticed

Not a single one knew

He was bright, he was colorful

And full of surprise

No one knew of the thoughts

Behind the funny man’s eyes

When the fateful day came

In the brisk early morn

Those who knew him weren’t ready

To grieve and to mourn

But when the tears have been shed

And the cries start to fade

People start to forget

About the funny man’s name

What’s his name, what’s his face

He who made us all laugh

Now he’s just a dead stranger

Now it’s all in the past

When the days turn to weeks

And the weeks into years

People tend to forget

All the laughs, all the tears

But it didn’t take years

Or weeks or days

For the next funny man

To astound and amaze

Heed this warning, bystander

If the funny man’s laughing

Don’t be shy to inquire

What the funny man’s masking

If you see him, console him

Try to see what he thinks

Try to stop this old tale

Or he’ll be gone in a blink

And no one cared to attend

Even less to be late

To go pay their respects

At the funny man’s wake
