Perpetuity

Amelia knelt by the side of her bed

and asked about mortality

The response

was so overwhelming

that she cried for days

I always thought she had all of the answers

besides trivia of course

Amelia sucked at that.

I suppose she sucked at this, too.

We sat quietly on the steps of building 43S

on a cold winter’s night

radiant with snowfall

breath drifting like smoke

Amelia could always sense my yearning

to understand just who she was

And after some time

she finally looked me in the eyes

and said, “the sad thing about silence

is the lack of words to rhyme”

and then,

a tear drop formed.

Me: Forgetting that she hadn’t

much fondness for trivial pursuit

asked if she knows why

her tears don’t freeze

She didn’t answer

And we just sat there

without words
