English Language and Literature Department
To kindle a lifelong love for language and literature, and to equip students with the skills to navigate an increasingly complex world.
The English Language and Literature Department isn't just about dusty old books and grammar rules (though we do love those, too!). We're dedicated to fostering a deep appreciation for the written word and the power of effective communication in ways that are both educational and exciting. We strive to cultivate students who are not only proficient in language but also critical thinkers, discerning readers, and creative writers who aren't afraid to have a little fun with words.
This year, our students have:
Explored diverse literary genres, from classic novels that transport us to different eras to contemporary poetry that challenges our perspectives, broadening their understanding of different perspectives and cultures.
Honed their analytical and writing skills through engaging discussions, debates that sometimes got a little too lively, and creative writing workshops where imagination took center stage.
Showcased their talents in various competitions and events, celebrating the beauty and versatility of language – and proving that English can be pretty cool.
Developed their communication and presentation skills, preparing them to be confident and articulate individuals, ready to take on the world (or at least ace that presentation).
Here are some of the fun programs that we ran this year:
Inter-class Debate: Students engaged in rigorous debates on a variety of thought-provoking (and sometimes controversial!) topics, honing their argumentation and public speaking skills. We witnessed some truly epic battles of words!
Student Activist Project: This program empowered students to become advocates for causes they believe in. They developed compelling speeches, demonstrating the power of language to inspire change and maybe even start a revolution (of ideas, of course).
Descriptive Writing Project: Students explored their sensory perceptions and unleashed their creativity by designing chocolates and crafting vivid descriptions of their creations. Who knew English could be so delicious?
Looking Back:
Our literature students attended the musical, Hamilton, in 2024 at Marina Bay Sands! This was a fantastic opportunity for them to experience the magic of live theatre and appreciate the artistry of language in a very modern and musical way.
As we close this chapter, we celebrate the achievements of our students and commend their passion for learning. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated teachers for their unwavering commitment to nurturing a love for English Language and Literature. Here's to another year of exploring the boundless possibilities of language and literature!
