Bring an Adult to School Day - Thanks to everyone who participated!

We would like to thank the amazing parents and students who took part in our Bring an Adult to School Day on Thursday 20th July.

It was a fantastic experience, which brought lots of our school community together. We can't wait to work with you all again in the future. It was a great example of when we work together, we achieve a lot more!

If any parents, carers or other family members would like to become involved then we would love to hear from you. Feel free to contact the school and ask for Mrs Wiles if you're interested.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Brooke Monk, who recently received three awards as part of her activities out of school with her football team!

She received a trophy for Parents' Player and her team won two medals: one for being the Cup winners and one for being League runners up. Well done, Brooke!

FIFA Women's World Cup - Reading Challenge!

Havant Academy has made a pledge to support girls' football in 2022/23. Because of this, we were lucky enough to be sent multiple copies of Leah Williamson's book, "You Have the Power" from the Literacy Trust.

If anyone would like to play along with the Reading Challenge, you can download your own wall chart at: https://literacytrust.org.uk/resources/womens-world-cup/

These brand new books will be available to take out from the library next school year!

 John Muir Award

It is with great excitement that we can announce that over 400 KS3 students have achieved their John Muir Award.

They have worked hard in all weathers on a range of activities that cover the four aspects of the award.

Most of all we have had great fun doing it!

Students will receive their certificates in the celebration assemblies.

Treasure these certificates as this is a nationally recognised award and will look great on a CV!

Days Out Now

Days Out Now provide a brilliant website signposting activities and events for families across the UK.

They also work closely with charities such as 'Something to Looks Forward To', a charity that exist to promote the well-being, relieve the stress and aid the recuperation of those who are experiencing the effects of cancer and its treatments, together with their families. In particular by the provision of positive individual and/or family experiences.

They recently published this free resource that details a range of restaurants and places that families can eat for low-cost with children over the summer holiday period.

Read for Good - thank you!

Havant Academy has won ‘A Brilliant Box of Books’ from Read for Good, a charity which supports schools with reading.

Our boxes contained around 150 brand new books and comics to revitalise our library stock for the next school year.

The school's librarians were lucky enough to get a sneak preview and unboxed the books today.

Thank you so much!

International Women's Day

International Women's Day is on the 8th March 2023.

A range of books celebrating women's success and achievements, trials and tribulations have been picked out and are on display in the library.

This year's theme is Embrace Equity.

We hope pupils come to the library to pick a book that celebrates this message!

World Book Day 2023

For World Book Day this year, students and teachers got into the spirit by dressing up as their favourite literary characters.

We had some amazing costumes from Lord of the Rings, to pupils dressing as characters from Heartstopper.

We even had a pupil dressed as a banana and another as a dinosaur! Here are some of the staff dressed up for the day.

As part of the celebrations, pupils completed an emoji literary quiz and a book hunt with first lines from a range of books.

Kimba at Havant Academy for World Book Day

On Friday 3rd March, Havant Academy celebrated World Book Day.

We were lucky to have the amazingly talented poet and rapper, Kimba, come to us for the day.

He showed our pupils how rap music and poetry are interlinked, performing his poetry with a hip hop twist. He also took two workshops and the pupils involved produced amazing work of their own, writing poetry about numerous subjects from war to football and their favourite literary characters.

Twenty copies of Kimba's book, signed by Kimba himself, are for sale in the library and will be sold on a first come, first served basis. If your child would like one, they should bring £6.00 to Miss Parsons in the library.

If they wish to reserve one, then they can add their name to the list and bring the money in at a later date.

TikTok

You may be aware that there is a social media trend, which has emerged over the last week or so, for students to conduct ‘protests’ in their school. The subject of the protests has focused on uniform expectations and other rules or standards that students are not happy about. There are around 700 schools nationally that have featured on the social media platform tiktok which is where this comes from.

I am absolutely clear that the school will not be disrupted by deliberate acts that set out to undermine standards and expectations. I ask that you speak with your child and ensure that they understand that, if they become involved in this behaviour, I will respond by using the full weight of our behaviour policy. The place for students to express their views is through the school council, the regular questionnaires we use to get their feedback or by speaking with school staff.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further then please get in touch

Dance Live - a message from Miss Way

A message from Miss Way, Subject Leader for Dance....

Just wanted to share a couple pictures from Dance Live yesterday.

The students were fantastic and a credit to the school. For most of them it was their first time time performing on a stage so they were incredibly nervous but they were amazing!

A special thanks to Miss Everett, Miss Kitchin, Miss Carter-Brown and Miss Kemp-Garcia who were so much help on the day!

A huge 'shout out' to Miss Kemp-Garcia who did our LED screen video - honestly could not have done it without her!

Thank you so all the staff that came to support, the students really appreciated seeing you there.

We had loads of parents come, they were one of the loudest groups in the audience!

Thank you!

Kimba at Havant Academy for World Book Day

Dear parents/carers,

We are thrilled that the poet and musician, Kimba, is visiting Havant Academy for World Book Day, which we are celebrating on Friday 3rd March.

If you wish to purchase his book of poetry prior to the visit, please go to https://www.authorsabroad.com/bookshop/writethewrongs-kimba and select delivery to Havant Academy. Kimba will then sign and personalise the book for your child on the day.

Havant Academy is excited for such a vibrant visitor, who performs his poetry with a hip hop edge!

Dance Live - a message from Mr Noble

In regards to the students named below I wanted to write to you all to say how proud we should be of all of them. Their performance last night highlighted the character we want all of our students to display. Determination, positivity, resilience, team work and enjoyment shone through in abundance. With the support of our staff they were able to show what a positive influence we can have as a school.

They performed cohesively as a single well oiled machine. Each cog playing its part to ensure they all shone together as a team. After a very long day (the coached arrived back at school at 11pm) they were still beaming from ear to ear as they know they have done something special. They were the first in what I am sure will become an annual performance at Dance Live.

Every student deserves your congratulations.

Miss Way, Miss Carter-Brown, Miss Kitchin, Miss Everett and Miss Kemp-Garcia enabled these students to do something spectacular which will live long in their memories.

After a long day I have told the students they can arrive late today. I'll have to think of an appropriate thank you for the staff that supported them (suggestions welcome). I owe them all a debt of gratitude.

I'm very proud of you all.

Nights like last night make it all worth it.

Mr Noble

Congratulations to:

Raya O, Ruby S, Hattie L, Keira M, Alisha H, Jessica H, Megan P, Kiri D, Darcie C, Lily-May R, Scartlett G, Jamie T, Jess H, Keeley B, Violet M, Shanaya S, Sasha N, Maddison O, Megan R,

Girls rugby development at Havant Rugby Club

A group of Year 9 girls took part in a rugby development day hosted by Hayling College at Havant Rugby Club. They went from never having touched a rugby ball to taking on some experienced teams - all with inspiring teamwork and resilience.

The day began with students from five schools being mixed up into groups with different coaches to learn the basics from scrumming, passing, rucking and even tacking. Havant Academy's friendliness really shone through as they quickly made new friends.

In the afternoon we played some games with Havant Academy taking on Hayling College, Purbrock, Chichester Free School and Oaklands. We won some, lost some, scored some tries, made some tackles, ran some meters, caught the ball, dropped the ball - all with smiles on their faces.

The students were an incredible credit to the school. They really impressed the coaches with how they improved and took ownership of the games not needing much sideline direction as they progressed with Keeley B stepping up as captain.  They were supportive of each other, celebrating as if they won each time one of them achieved something new, be it catching the ball, kicking the ball, making a tackle, standing in a defensive line or scoring a try.

Mr Povey and I were incredibly proud of them and I know you all will be as well  - rugby is not an easy sport. Please congratulate them on how they represented the school and themselves.

Alfie Hardy-O'Brien - Year 11

Alfie has been taking part in their football competitions which involved 300+ cadets and was selected to represent Hampshire and the Isle of Wight at the Regionals.

After playing in the Regionals, Alfie has now been selected to play for the Nationals representing England at the end of February.

Congratulations!

STRIKE ACTION AT HAVANT ACADEMY

Dear parents and carers,

I am sure you will be aware from recent media reports that the National Education Union (NEU) has declared strike action for teaching staff in both February and March. The NEU have informed the Government that the following dates will likely be affected by strike action:

While the planned action is as a result of a national dispute between the unions and the Government, and not the school, it is important that we respond accordingly in the interests of our students whilst respecting the rights of our staff. Therefore, my aim is to give you as much notice as possible of the likely impact of the strike action on the school. Whilst the March dates are still some way ahead of us, I am able to let you know what our plan is for Wednesday 1st February.

When planning our on-site provision, we have prioritised students in Year 11, who are preparing for exams this summer, and we will run in-person classes for these year groups on 1st February. On this day, Year 11 students are expected to attend school as normal.

For Years 7, 8, 9 and 10, we shall provide work remotely for students to complete.  They will be able to access this work via google classroom.

For a small group of students with specific needs, we will provide the option of onsite provision so that they can carry out the remote work under supervision. If your child is identified as requiring this need, we will contact you separately to confirm arrangements.

Students that are eligible for free school meals not required in school will be issued with a £5 food voucher, via email,  at the end of the day on Tuesday 31st January which can be used in major supermarkets. For those students in school, catering will continue as normal.

We appreciate that industrial action is disruptive and you may need to change your plans or working arrangements whilst this action is ongoing. If the strike action is called off then we will confirm this as soon as we have been notified and, in this eventuality, the school will be open as usual to all students.

As I explained at the start of this letter, the NEU has indicated that there is further strike action planned for the 2nd March, 15th and 16th March. Please make a note of these dates now and I will write to you in advance of each date to confirm any changes to arrangements and whether the strike is going ahead.

If you have any questions or concerns about the alternative arrangements outlined above, please do contact us.

Yours sincerely,

Mr C Noble

We've had 30 students sign up for the 2 days!

We have played games, broken ice, made swings and got incredibly muddy.... followed by a hot chocolate over a fire.

Ms Wiles has a waiting list and is happy to continue to take on students as this will give an indication of how many would like to come and how many adults are required to support the Club.

Strep A

Dear Parent / Carers

You will have heard that there is an increase in scarlet fever in school age children in England. We need to remember that infections remain extremely rare.

Although scarlet fever is usually a mild illness, it should be treated with antibiotics to minimise the risk of complications and reduce the spread to others.

The symptoms of scarlet fever include a sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. This is followed by a fine red rash which typically first appears on the chest and stomach, rapidly spreading to other parts of the body. On more darkly-pigmented skin, the scarlet rash may be harder to spot, but it should feel like 'sandpaper'. The face can be flushed red but pale around the mouth.

If you think you, or your child, have scarlet fever:

• See your GP or contact NHS 111 as soon as possible

• Make sure that you/your child takes the full course of any antibiotics prescribed by the doctor.

• Stay at home, away from school for at least 48 hours after starting the antibiotic treatment (in line with school policy) to avoid spreading the infection

If your child has an underlying condition which affects their immune system, you should contact your GP or hospital doctor to discuss whether any additional measures are needed.

We are so excited and can’t wait to see the design come to life thanks to the National Lottery.

Parents/Carers,

We will be running a Parent/Carer forum before the end of this term. This is your opportunity to contribute to the successful running of Havant Academy.

Please sign up via the link below to join us at school for our Parent/Carer forum on Tuesday 5th July. Two sessions are being offered, one during school time and one after school.

This will be a chance to discuss the needs of the school and how we can work together to ensure its continued success. We will initially focus on the broader aspects of school. If you wish to raise individual, specific concerns about your child please contact their Head of Year directly (contact details are on our website).

Refreshments will be available. So that we are able to order the correct amount of refreshments, please sign up to the Parent/Carer forum here by Friday 1st July.

Kind regards,

Mr Noble

Havant Academy is celebrating

Havant Academy is celebrating after being awarded £10,000 in funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK.

The Academy will use their new National Lottery funding to build a beautiful space with Mark Ford from Two Circle Designs www.twocircledesigns.co.uk to hold group  sessions for the Alternative Curriculum students and the wider school community.

We have come together as a school and submitted over 150 designs to Mark. We have also worked hard with our students to clear the space and get ready for the build! The school community is very excited to see which design will be built.

Craig Noble, Headteacher and Nicky Wiles, Alternative Curriculum Manager said, “Thanks to National Lottery players, this grant means that we can start building a beautiful outside space with Mark Ford from Two Circle Designs www.twocircledesigns.co.uk

This will make a big difference to our students and the community.”

National Lottery players raise over £30 million a week for good causes across the UK. The National Lottery Community Fund distributes a share of this to projects to support people and communities to prosper and thrive.

During the pandemic, in 2020 alone, The National Lottery Community Fund distributed almost £1 billion to charities and community organisations across the UK.

A former student receiving his degree

Jordan Donovan

It’s always wonderful when you hear success stories from our students. Jordan’s family have been in touch to thank Havant Academy and share his news.

Jordan left Havant Academy and completed two years at HSDC Havant and South Downs studying a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, Performance and Excellence Football Academy achieving a D*DD.

He then went to Solent University to study Football Studies and Business and came out with a 2:1.

In true Jordan style, he threw a curve ball in the mix and completed a Masters in Law (LLM) at Portsmouth University where he achieved a merit

Mr Noble, Headteacher at Havant Academy said, “He's a great example of how working hard gets you where you want to be. Jordan embodies our school motto of, Work hard. Be kind. No excuses!

Jordan and his family would like to thank everyone at Havant Academy for their support.

South East Hampshire Athletics Competition

Congratulations to young boxer Ray Taylor from Leigh Park ABC Club who is also a student at Havant Academy.

Ray and two others from the Leigh Park Club competed in the semi-finals of the English Schools Championships in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

BAE Roadshow

Havant Academy we were lucky enough to have the BAE Roadshow present to Y7 and Y8.

They provided an interactive 'live' show about electromagnets and some of the work that BAE does (including engineering jets, tanks and aeroplane carriers).

We got to see some ‘magic’ tricks explained, some gadgets and video explanations and a giant electromagnet big enough to hoist an adult.

Students and staff all had a brilliant time, especially Miss O’Brien who was hoisted by the giant electromagnet!

EACH-B trial

Two of our Year 8 classes at Havant Academy have had the opportunity to take part in a large-scale research programme with the University of Southampton and the Lifelab facility at University Hospital Southampton.

There are 50 schools across Hampshire taking part and over 2000 students will be involved. The research programme is called EACH-B (Engaging Adolescents in Changing Behaviour) and is exploring how best to support young people to lead healthy and happy lives.

Today the Year 8s completed questionnaires online about their eating habits, their activity levels and their wellbeing. They will also be wearing activity tracker watches (in the photo) for a week, so the researchers can monitor exactly how much activity they do every day.

Next year, when these students are in Year 9 they will do this again, in order to measure any changes in their lifestyle habits over the last twelve months, and after that our students will get the opportunity to go to the University in Southampton and visit Lifelab where they will do lots of fun practical activities focused around measuring their own health.

Havant Academy will also benefit from all the Lifelab teaching resources and materials at that point, when our role in this large research programme will be finished.

The session today went really well and the Year 8s really enjoyed taking part in real scientific research!

Many thanks to the Science Department, Millie Barrett and Sarah Shaw at the University of Southampton.

Sora in the Library

Recently our amazing Librarian Ms Parsons entered the school into a competition.  She was delighted to open up an email and see that our school has won $250 as our displays were selected as 'Runner-Up - Best Visual/Virtual Displays'.

This is what was sent off to Sora....

We launched Sora in our school by giving each student in years 7 and 8 a personalised bookmark with their Sora log in. This helped the pupils to access Sora at home.

I created some displays centered around Sora and books that are available.

All other pupils have log ins for Sora too, and their tutors keep records of their log ins so they can access it at any time.

In our library, I try to keep displays exciting and new. The Sora displays in our library are attached. The 'Bookflix' display, with an obvious nod to Netflix, features lots of Sora books that are now films or tv series on Netflix and other viewing platforms.

Having Sora has meant that our library catalogue is now so much bigger and the pupils are very happy at the choice of reading material that is now available to them.

The other display, on the library’s front desk, shows eBooks and audiobooks that are available on Sora that also have Accelerated Reader quizzes as we use both in our school to promote a reading culture. When pupils have read a book, they complete a quiz on Accelerated Reader that ensures comprehension skills are improved with each book read.

Each library lesson that the year 7 and 8s have involve students listening to audiobooks and reading books on Sora, as well as reading real life books in silence.

They especially love the chance to spend an hour listening to their favourite audiobooks with headphones!

We even feature in the Portsmouth News this week

Medical Mavericks

On Friday the 25th March, the year 9 students were given the opportunity to use medical equipment usually reserved for Doctors, Nurses and other medical practitioners.

This was a careers session run by Medical Mavericks, a team of doctors and trainee doctors. The aim was to highlight the variety of roles available in the NHS and what different types of equipment is used for.

Students were able to try their hand at keyhole surgery, taking blood from a fake arm as well as a whole range of other medical equipment.

Staff also had the opportunity to join in.

Miss Morra is incredibly proud of the Year 11 students who performed and knows that they will do well in their real external assessment which starts in January with the music maternity cover teacher. The repertoire spanned most genres from Grunge Rock to Classical, Pop to Musical Theatre, all of which the Year 7 and 8 students immensely enjoyed.
