Pupil Premium
Background
The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011. It is funding that is given to schools by the Government to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils. In 2012-2012 the Pupil Premium funding was extended to pupils who had been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years. This is referred to as the Ever6 Free School Meals Measure. Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and a smaller amount for the children of service personnel.

What are our Principles?
Through our work and ethos as a TKAT academy; 'raising aspirations, changing lives', it is our firm belief that the rights of all children are upheld and that those with more support needs or who are disadvantaged receive the relevant support in order for them to achieve their full potential.
The Staff and Governors of Havant Academy are committed to working in partnership with students and parents / carers to ensure that provision is made which guarantees learning for all students so that everyone makes maximum progress and reaches their potential. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all groups of students and is constantly reviewed to ensure it meets this objective.
The Academy welcomes and shares the government’s aim of tackling all forms of social disadvantage and wants to provide everyone with opportunities that will support inclusion: by focusing on providing full access to opportunities available to others, support to improve attendance and ultimately securing the best possible educational outcomes for each individual student.
Havant Academy will account for all Pupil Premium money in an open and responsible way and all provision will be regularly reviewed and evaluated.
In our context, some Pupil Premium students flourish but others have the following barriers to achieving in school, known to us by the use of performance, attendance and behaviour data as well as frequent discussions with the students themselves:
* Low self esteem
* Low aspirations
* Poor attendance
* Lower literacy and numeracy ability
* Other welfare issues that result in students not 'ready to learn'
Catch Up Funding
Covid Catch-Up Grant
Havant Academy has been awarded the sum of £37,000 to support pupils in 'catching up' during the Coronavirus pandemic.
We have been assessing pupils over the first term to understand where gaps in learning have occurred and have already adapted the curriculums that pupils are following to address the gaps found. In addition to in-class adaptions we aim to spend the catch-up funding in the following ways to further support our pupils:
Employing an English Academic Mentor to improve the progress of students in English. This member of staff will be working with low ability students in all year groups
Purchasing of of books and texts for whole tutor groups so that pupils can ALL take part in engaging and interactive reading sessions
Staff training on the phonics method of teaching
Year 7 Catch-Up Funding and Evaluation 2019-20
Havant Academy received £22,000 to support Year 7 catch-up in literacy and numeracy for the academic year 2019-20.
Measuring impact is more challenging due to the school closures in March 2020, but the following strategies were funded with impact shown:
Employment of an additional keyworker - improving the progress of students who are SEND. Due to the school closure last year, it is difficult to measure the impact of this. However, we know that our SEND students were better supported through lockdown because of this additional member of staff who was able to support more students virtually.

This is a link to Renaissance Home Connect. Students and parents can access Accelerated reader from home to have a look at progress and track their achievements.
Lexia
Selected Pupil Premium and SEND students also have access to Lexia Reading software to support them in developing and practising reading skills.
Numeracy Support
Numeracy is a crucial life skill that is needed in many aspects of everyday life, from catching a bus to managing a budget. Across our curriculum, we approach numeracy as a life skill, as well as to improve the mathematical ability of our students.
Numeracy is taught in many subjects across the Academy, and teachers strive to ensure that the same mathematical approach is used in all lessons.
Selected Pupil Premium and SEND students also have access to additional Numeracy interventions to support them in developing their mathematical skills.
