In supporting our students to develop these skills we aim to help them navigate their way through an increasingly diverse range of qualifications both academic and vocational and beyond into an ever changing world of work. Students have the opportunity to discuss their career aspirations and the options open to them at key stages of their education during a careers interview with Emma Bagnall (Advice and Guidance Practitioner from the EBP South).

Careers education & guidance at Havant Academy supports and compliments other aspects of the curriculum such as PSHE, citizenship and the opportunity to take part in the College Taster days for the local colleges.

Through the Work Related Learning & Enterprise Education Programme students have the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary to succeed in the work place. This includes work experience placements, mentoring programme and working with local business volunteers through EBP South.  Work experience is organised for Havant Academy in partnership with EBP. The work experience co-ordinator and administrator liaise closely with students to arrange suitable placements with local employers.

Local colleges, training providers, employers, EBP South, all play an integral role in the programme, giving our students the opportunity to benefit from a range of experiences in and out of school.

Some of the highlights include:

• Year 8 and 9 - Opportunities to work with the Universities out reach teams on various projects

• Year 10 -  One week work experience & visits to local colleges

• Year 11 -  Mock Interview Day run with the support of local employers and EBP South

• Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11  - Also have access to Careers fair’s at the Academy and through local events

Through this wide partnership and variety of experiences students are able to make informed choices about their options for post 16 and Post 18.  The ultimate aim being for each young person to choose the right career path for them and achieve their full potential.

Year 7

• 1 x 50-minute group sessions - Session 1: Understanding Decision Making & Preparing for Options Choices

• Year 9 Preferences Evening

Year 10

• Work experience

• 1 X 50-minute session - GCSEs and Where They Lead to Post 16 and Post 18

• Careers Practitioner one-to-one interview

• Students Attend Careers Fair

• Your Futures Programme:

  • Session 1: 1 x 50 Business Speed Networking for all Year 10 Group

  • Session 2: 5 X 5 Group Sessions on Interview Preparation for all Year 10 Group

  • Session 3: 25-minute Interview with an Employer plus written feedback on performance and areas for improvement.

Year 11

• Follow up Careers Practitioner one-to-on interview

• Careers Fair

• Tracking & Destination

• Apprenticeship Workshop:

  • Session 1: Different ways of finding an apprenticeship and Registering

  • Session 2: Working on completing/updating professional CV

  • Session 3: Meet and sign up with a minimum of 5 training providers/employers for relevant apprenticeship opportunities.

Apprenticeships:

You work for an employer and train to do a specific job at the same time. There are over 280 types of apprenticeship for over 1,500 job roles – anything from engineering to boat-building, or veterinary nursing to accountancy. 

Traineeships:

Gets you ready for work or for doing an apprenticeship. They last from six weeks to six months and provide essential work preparation training, literacy and numeracy skills and work experience to get an apprenticeship or other job.

Supported Internships:

Just for students with learning difficulties or learning disabilities who want to get a job and need extra support to do this. They last for at least six months and are unpaid. You get work experience and an employer trains you to do a job role. You also get to study for qualifications or other courses to help you get ready to take up a job.
