Dragon Playing with Rope

Colored pencil, Graphite

3 1/2" by 4 1/2"

The main Idea that guided my artwork was color. I wanted to make this piece of art very bold and bright while still having that playful message. I wanted to show something different than just a dragon holding a piece of rope in its mouth so I tried to add different factors like the tree and the fish scales. Another idea that guided this piece was a unicorn. I added that singular horn at the top shows that idea a little but I also tried to show it by making the dragon a little softer and easier to look at than such a harsh animal. I tried to make the dragon appear slightly nicer than some of the cartoons you usually see on tv but I also contrasted that by adding the bomb at the end of the lit rope.

For this piece of art, I started by using painter’s tape to make a smaller square so I wouldn’t have such a big overwhelming space. Then I used an HB art pencil for some quick outlines to get an idea of where I wanted to place my dragon and tree in my square. I later used colored pencils to add the color. The shading on the tree and areas of the dragon were shaded with darker colors like red and purple. I used all of the colors of the rainbow to try and make this artwork as vivid and colorful as possible. To finish I peeled the tape off to reveal clean edges and the end result.

To spark some ideas at the beginning I looked up some images of dragons. I saw many different types like cartoons, drawings, paintings, and more realistic versions like the ones you see in movies. I saw all of these and tried to combine some features of the many that I saw. At first, the outlines, placement, and shape took me a while to figure out what I wanted, but eventually, I created a sketch with the HB pencil of what I wanted to create. This did take me many tries and I attempted to make some of these features on another piece of paper before I started.
