Oil Pastel, water color, oil stick, on Watercolor Paper

Artist statement

We started by drawing faces of other people in our class with a singular continuous line. We did this 4 times without looking at our papers. I saw many shapes in the lines and decided that I liked the face of a man that I drew. I made a zoomed in version of his brain using one of the continues lines that was supposed to look like a face but ended up looking like random shapes. On the bottom I saw two faces facing each other so I used this to my advantage and created a scene with them below the man and his brain. The man looks old and decrepit so I thought darker colors would represent the chaos of the new world compared to the simple world he is used to or needs. The top scene is bleeding into the bottom scene through drops of purple showing how the young can be affected by the old.

This work started being made with black oil pastel. I then used graphite to create the lines that I wanted to create after. I went over these lines again with black oil pastel to create more dramatic lines. I then went in with each color of the rainbow but some tints and shades of these colors to add color and brightness to the piece. I then used water color to create more lightness and have a lighter weight to the bottom scene. I then used colored wax stick to draw dramatic purple lines to go over and use a heat gun to melt these to make the dripping effect.

Overall I would rate this piece a 6 out of ten. I like the idea of the piece but I wish I didn't have such a dark pallet even though it makes the piece dramatic and a statement. I used picasso a little bit as an inspiration because of the geometric shapes and deep color pallet. Next time I would Use more white oil pastels and create lighter lines.
