Artist statement

For this project, I started by thinking about which positions, objects, or area of my face I wanted to draw. I chose my eye because this has many shadows and hairs going in every which direction making this area harder. I chose my laptop, my phone, and my pencil because these are things I use daily during and outside of the school day. I also chose this hand gesture because I thought it was unique from my peers' gestures. They all used their thumbs to create the negative space but I wanted to do something outside the box. All three of these things are important to me in very different ways.

I started with drawing paper: 9" by 12". I used 4H and 2H graphite pencils on top of the drawing paper. I used these materials because I am very familiar with them and I know how to control the materials in the ways I want. I used these so that I could create an accurate and realistic representation of each figure. I also used various techniques such as shading and playing with lines.

For this piece, I chose to keep it black and white. I chose this because it keeps the pieces emotionless and strictly about the figure. I started with the cropped self-portrait because I find it extremely hard to look at myself for long periods of time. Even though we only had 20 minutes to take of each of these pieces I still found it the hardest to draw my own features and details. I then proceeded to draw the still life. I chose these three objects because they had been carried around with me since the start of the school year. The odd amount of objects allows me to choose and placement of them and allow me to choose their positioning. Finally, I finished with my hand gesture. I like the use of the negative and postive space with the finger placement. Overall if I were to redo this I would want to spend more time is to make them even more acurate.
