Artist Statement

For this project, our prompt was to create a project using a minimum of 2 elements of principles of design. My favorite two were the pattern/texture and unity/ space boxes. I also wanted to include lots of colors. I tried to combine all of these to create colorful pattern-based media. There wasn't plan exact message for this but I was just trying to create something cool to look at and get my mind to think in different ways than it usually does. When I was first sketching this out I started to like how different things were layered. I started with a ruler and created many different squares that are connected to each other. I also knew that with the curved lines I wanted different patterns between them.

For my materials, I started out with graphite. I used this to sketch out my ideas and form a base for what I wanted to create. I used watercolor paper and then used my graphite to create the first sketches of this design. I then used a ruler to create many squares that connected to each other. I then used the same graphite pencil to create curved lines that move vertically. I then got a paintbrush, water, and watercolor for the color aspect of the piece. I filled in each triangle with different colors but in the different triangles, I used different shades and tints in the curves and lines that created even more shapes. Once I completed each of these triangles I went and filled these with the patterns. I wanted these patterns to each be simple but effective so I used small shapes of lines to create this.

Overall I am happy with the outcome of this work. I like the different parts of the piece and how they all connect to each other. When our entire class was finished we did critiques. The critiques I received were to clean up my lines and not line my watercolor bleed into the other triangles. ended up not adding anything because these were things I could redo or change.
