Artists Statement

For this project we were asked to asked to create a simple coil cylinder at a minimum just taller than it is wide obviously the height will vary depending on the design and function of your form. Including this, other suggestions were you want to keep the sides pretty thick because we will carve designs into the walls making sure that you smooth the coils inside and out as you go, limit the likelihood of cracks, designs can be abstract or realistic, organic or geometric, designs can cut all the way through, these can have lids. I started by making a bunch of coils that were very thick and putting them into circles about the diameter that I wanted. after putting together a few coils I made a base the size appropiate for the coils(shown below). As I put more coils I continued to score and slip them as well as try to smooth them out. As I started to get to the top it got more uneven and I wish I could have fixed this before it dried. I then let this bone dry and then put underglaze on it, pink and yellow and then it went into its first fire. I then put clear glaze on it for it to go back in for its second firing.

I used different elements of art than I had previously in my works. I tried to add a mixture of color on one pot as well as texture and shape through the use of scgriffitoing the clay to make indents. This indentation was used to create plant images, my moms favor aspect of life, as well as line work inside the work to make the piece look elongated. Continually for my principles of design I tried to use contrast through my different choices of color, one very bright and bold while the other is more feminine and suddle. By adding this contrast I feel like it accentuated the depth of the piece. I also tried to include balance through my amount of sgraffito I did. I tried to equally add plants all around the pot to make it more level.

My idea for this was mainely inspiration from my mom. I wanted to create a special gift that I could give her for the holidays. She loves both of these colors, plants, and vases to put her plants in so I thought it would be a great idea. This project I think shows the work I put into school, although it work hard, it's not always very pretty, but it eventually becomes useful. My proudest part of this artwork way my creativity. I loved how I indluded the lines on the inside, I think that added depth and an extra element to make it look visually appealing. I struggled to make this piece look clean. I fonud that th eunderglaze would spread in places I didn't want it to and craving the clay out was hard when I wanted it to look precise. I tried my best to make these look good, because it adds an effect of having it be visually appealing. Overall I am proud of my work and will hope it to be useful to my mother.
