Artist Statement

For this project we were all assigned to make a random scribble on a blank sheet of paper. Next, all the scribbles were mixed up and handed out to different students. with the scribble we received we had to see a bigger picture within the line and create a original drawing. When I first saw my scribble I thought of a rock climber hanging off a cliff. Then I saw a nose in the originally to be cliff, and decided to create an up close, somewhat comical drawing of a person's face. To create my drawing I mostly just used a graphite pencil, and for some detailing I used colored pencils. I used the colors yellow, red, blue, and brown to add to the plain graphite. With the yellow colored pencil I shaded the person's teeth slightly yellow. I also used red on the lips, some blue on the tip of the nose. To make the eyebrows stand out more I added in the brown colored pencil. I began the process by lightly sketching an outline of the persons face. I experimented with several different face shapes as well as expressions. I decided upon having the person screaming, their eyes squinted shut. I added shading around the edges of the face, as well as any shadows that would normally be there.

The most noticeable element of design in my squiggle drawing is line, as we all started off with a sharpie squiggle on our page. I added value to my drawing by using the pencil to shade in areas around the face that would normally have shadows. I continued the shading around the side of the face to make it seem more dimensional rather than flat. I also, somewhat unintentionally, used space in my drawing as the face only takes up half the page. For the principles of design, I have some contrast as the person is very distinct and stands out from the rest of the blank page. Also, by adding color to certain parts of the face (nose, eyebrows, teeth, and lips) I added contrast to the gray of the face.

At first there really was no distinct story or idea I had in mind for my drawing. However I think everyone can interpret it differently. Some may think the person is screaming in pain, others that it is singing or yelling! This piece doesn't really relate to my life. However the meaning I have created for my drawing is that all people have problems or emotions and sometimes you can't hold them in anymore. One thing I am proud of is how well the shading went. I think it added a lot of dimension and depth to the drawing and made it a bit more realistic despite some of its unrealistic features. I struggled with drawing the eye as I wasn't sure how to approach it. Should they be comical, or realistic? Realistic eyes aren't my strength so I decided to draw it squinted shut, just using a couple of lines. I tried a couple of different techniques, including shading and darkening the lines, till I was satisfied with how the eye looks now. Looking back on the project, I will go back on my own time and add short blurbs or words cut out of newspapers and stick them into the empty space on the paper. I would make it so that it looks like the words are coming out of the person's mouth. This would add pattern, contrast and texture, as well add to the story of my squiggle.
