Artist Statement

For this piece, I explicitly wanted to achieve several goals set for the remainders of my sustained investigation, those being incorporating color, creating environments for my buildings, and experiment with different mediums and processes. Taking a past design, I aimed to offset the monotony of the row houses, which standing alone look dull and lifeless, with warm color to convey a sense of ease and happiness. Lately, I have enjoyed sketching these somewhat bizarre, warped faces, which I wanted to somehow incorporate, and through the warm color scheme and content facial expressions I tried to tie them in.

For this investigation I wanted to experiment with color, the best option to achieve that being colored pencils, which I had yet to use in my sustained investigation. Following a simple sketch in two point perspective to determine how best to position the buildings on my paper, I just went in with the colored pencils, making sure to utilize warm tones on the faces and create enough contrast and depth with darker colors and shading.

As I already had a previous building design to go off of, I initially just experiment with positioning and perspective so as to best show off the buildings' features. I chose to use two point perspective, the horizon line meeting at the eye level of the viewer, in the hopes that it would give the piece more depth and convey a feeling of being on the street to the viewer. This perspective also allowed me place the faces throughout the scene, staggering them to create a sense of depth. In terms of color I chose warm tones for the faces, as their intent is to bring about a content atmosphere.
