Horizontal / Vertical Architecture Investigation 1

Artist Statement

This is the first of my architecture focused sustained investigation which surrounds the inquiry, how can horizontal and vertical elements juxtapose to impact the appearance and functionality of an architectural design. For this piece, I decided to adapt a past sculpture I had made in 3D design and drew the elevations, so each flat side of the design. I specifically wanted to depict how much of the negative space from the paper is left visible through the horizontal and vertical elements, and to show this contrast in two ways I essentially just inverted one of the drawings so rather than having light on dark I had dark on light as well.

For this piece, I already had a fairly set plan of how I wanted my drawing to look, and black micron pens proved to be the best fit. At first I wanted to use one sheet of black paper and one sheet of white paper and use opposite colors on each to show contrast, however the look of toned paper was more appealing to me as it gave the black pens a more gray, sketched look.

From the start I had a fairly set plan of what I wanted to draw and how I wanted to present it as it is based off of a sculpture I made at the end of last year. Having a significant interest in architecture prior to starting this investigation was helpful as I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted, however I sketched and experimented a lot with choices of paper as well as what kind of pen to use to best present my idea. I ended up revising the second drawing by adding the shaded, cross hatched border as I felt it tied the two pieces together better as they are intended to be presented as a cohesive series.
