Artist Statement

For this project, I chose one of several random, silly prompts, mine being draw a table with arms instead of legs. This piece felt somewhat experimental while still staying in the realm of material and style that I am familiar with. The prompt provided me with some guidelines of the subject of my work, however I decided to expand and exaggerate the hands. While drawing, I considered perspective and contrast, both in shading by contrasting light and dark, as well as playing with perspective to add more interest to my work. With this piece, as I was drawing I began to contemplate the idea of the hands trying to creep out of their position as legs, and the hand on top of the table has been caught, in the spotlight, and out of place.

For this piece, I used very familiar and comfortable materials, this being pen. I used several pens to alter the darkness of my dots, however it was consistently black pen.

When I started sketching, I had very little inspiration or ideas on how to further play on the prompt I chose. As I started sketching using two point perspectives, I realized I really liked the way the additional lines I drew to create the perspective looked, prompting me to include them in the form of spotlights in my final work. While sketching I constantly revised and revisited perspectives and tried out different sizes and angles. Overall, I viewed this piece as a quick, experimental means of getting back into drawing flat works.
