Artist Statement

For this piece I wanted to try a medium other than pen, which is typically my preference, and ended up using graphite, which allowed me to more boldly contrast the vertical elements I intended to represent on the building with the loose, horizontal ones of the landscape around it.

Originally, I considered using colored pencil, as I really wanted to start to bring in more color, however this did not have the effect I desired at all, prompting me to try graphite. I experimented with contrasting lines, varying the pressure and darkness of the pencils to see how they would interact both on the buildings facade as well as in the insinuated natural features in the background.

I really wanted to focus on bringing in more of an environment around my pieces since many appear to just float on a white page. However I originally began with a colorful, more detailed version that eventually morphed into a more graphic, black and white piece. Originally I experimented with colored pencils and vibrant colors, though this outcome did not appeal to me, prompting me to experiment with a more simplistic style. I wanted to juxtapose the horizontal lines of the loose landscape with vertical elements on the buildings exterior, and further emphasize contrast by varying line darkness.
