This drawing was an observational still life study of a plaster eye I found in the art room. I specifically wanted to focus on areas of light and shadow, and emphasizing the texture of the object. Since it was intended as a realistic observational study, I took my time to observe where specific highlights fell, as well as trying to keep the subject to scale so it appeared as realistic as possible.

For this study, I really focused on layering graphite to create shadows as well as an eraser and a lighter hand when creating areas of light. I began with an HB pencil and as I became more confident with my shape I gradually moved to a softer, more saturated graphite to achieve darker shadows, although I could've gone even more intense looking back. With a small eraser I was able to pinpoint areas in which I lightened the graphite so that I could create more intense highlights.

Much to my surprise, I did not spend much time researching or practicing this piece, it being a study somewhat incorporates all of those elements. As I drew, I experimented with different methods of layering graphite, what pencils worked best, and general techniques when it comes to observational drawing. Throughout, I revises and experimented, sometimes having to erase, draw, and erase again just to create a highlight. All in all, I am very satisfied with the way this study came out considering I don't often draw realistically from and object in front of me. It also helped me become more accustomed and less afraid of using graphite as through the use of tortillions and erasers the actual graphite is much easier to work with.
