Lizards
Colored Pencils and India Ink
9" x 9"
Artist Statement
For this piece, I had a blank paper with several random ink splotches on it on which I decided to draw some lizards. There wasn't much of meaning or concept behind this piece, the driving focus was that I wanted to try using colored pencils, for they are a material I tend to stay away from. I wanted to play with contrasting colors so I tried to interweave the lizards as well as add greenery to the background to make the subjects stand out.
I used entirely colored pencils for this piece as I really wanted to push myself to try out some new techniques, although I quickly remembered why I don't often use them. The process was fairly long and exhausting for not much of an outcome, however I did enjoy experimenting with shading and color.
This entire piece was very experimental, from materials to techniques to processes, which meant a lot of revision throughout. I constantly erased and colored, adding and subtracting layers to experiment with the different effects it had. I decided to go very colorful to have the biggest range of combinations of color available, not necessarily because of an intentional artistic choice but rather to add to the experimental aspect of the drawing.
