Architecture Investigation 14
Black pen
13.5" x 10"
Artist Statement
For this piece, I wanted to explore demonstrating scale for my designs by means of incorporating what realistically would be the environment and setting surrounding my building, whether it be through people or vegetation, all the while drawing in two point perspective to exhibit the complexity of the building design.
This piece was made with fine tipped black pens, which allowed me to focus on the specific elements and form of the structure and its surrounding rather than distract with color, as the intention is to show the building, the environment, and individuals interacting in unity and conjunction with one another. Furthermore, I was able to incorporate cross hatching throughout the piece by layering lines in the pen to create value and contrast, emphasizing the individual elements combined to create the structure.
This piece involved significant planning and sketching, beginning with the selection of a local site in Portland, Maine, to base the function of the structure on. Beginning with much experimentation in SketchUp, I was able to create the design for my structure, and move on to sketch varying perspectives so as to best present my design on paper. By drawing in two point perspective, I was able to best capture the complexity of the design as well as create a more tangible space for the viewer.
