Artist Statement
These three sketches are a part of the time capsule assignment in which I drew the outside of a building, a self portrait at an unusual angle, and something that I dislike. Each piece was a brief study in which I used my favorite medium, pen, but tried to experiment with different techniques of, for instance, shading. By varying each method of mark making I was able to see how the different processes interacted with different subjects, for instance how the sketch of my house is much more graphic and bold compared to the sketch of Swiss chard.
I used pen for each sketch as it is a medium I feel very comfortable with and do the majority of my work in. I did however, try to vary the thickness, opacity, and color to see the different effects it would have. I wanted the drawing of my house to be very graphic and design oriented so I chose a true black pen with completely solid masses of black. For my self portraits I wanted something lighter so that I could attempt to layer the ink to create shadows, and the swiss chard sketch was essentially a mix between the two.
Each sketch was a brief study where I wanted to challenge myself to draw in the moment, so to speak. Each sketch was experimental in its techniques, mediums, and styles. Additionally, I tend to draw more abstractly or at least without a reference so I really had to work on utilizing my observational skills while still implementing my own style.
