Block Prints and Ink

Artist Statement

For this piece I really wanted to experiment with a different medium, so I used linoleum blocks to make individual stamps that I could layer to tie in those horizontal and vertical elements. I primarily just wanted to experiment with a more loose process of creating, as many past pieces carry much detail and are for the most part guided by rulers and straight lines. By alternating line orientation and color I wanted to distinguish stories within the building as well as window elements identified by the red.

The main idea was to experiment with a different material and process of creating, so I made several block print tests with different line textures and sizes. Once a I created a final stamp, I continued to experiment with the stamp by trying variations of layering, eventually choosing to also try a different color and variation of lines.

Throughout the project I carved a number of linoleum blocks with slight variations based on the best printing results, loosely basing dimensions on my original sketch. As I started printing on my final paper I experimented with varying the orientation of the stamp to create overlapping lines and different effect, as well as trying a pop of red color to distinguish window elements in contrast to the black of the facade.
