Advanced Art and Design

Semester 1 Reflection

This semester, I have found great successes in further diving into architecture, my preferred future course of study and a consistent hobby, in the AP portion of the class through my sustained investigation. Devoting virtually all of my art class time to a significant interest has been really important in underlining my dedication and passion for the subject as well as depicting some struggles for me. For instance, I found that toward the end of the semester I struggled to maintain energy for individual projects and felt like I had an artists block regarding my chosen subject. However, over the break from the sustained investigations, I was able to reset and refocus, drawing inspiration from outside of the limited space of my mind at school, and allowing for stimulation from the greater nature and landscape around me. This has driven me to, in my sustained investigation, begin experimenting more with varying perspectives, incorporating real life things such as people and vegetation to create environments around my buildings, and perhaps trying some 'impossible' architecture or on the other end of the spectrum clear functions for buildings that are demonstrated in the art. I hope to push away more from mediums, techniques, styles, and designs that are simply comfortable and known to me, which will not only help me as an aspiring architect but also as an artist in the realm of AP, which seeks experimentation, revision, and progression. In addition to my sustained investigation, I have found a significant increase in experimenting and letting loose in the advanced art and design portion of the class, especially letting go of imperfections and working with them as opposed to restarting.
