Squiggle Drawing

The assignment we had to do, was the squiggle drawing. We first got a piece of paper and drew a "squiggle". Then we handed them in and were given a random one that another student created. We then used our imagination to create a scene or character using the squiggle assigned. The subject of my creation took place in the ocean, with a shark jumping out of the water for the kill. I used my pencil, and some colored pencils to create this drawing.

As I mentioned in the first paragraph, I used my pencil, and colored pencils to create this drawing. I used elements such as color, texture, and form to create the scene of the art. The sharks large, and dangerous shape, shows the viewer that it is indeed a shark and not a regular coral fish like the rest of the fish. And the suns color and texture of the rays shows us that is undoubtedly the sun and not just a random object floating in the sky. I also used principles like movement, balance, and contrast to create the "realistic feel" of the finishing product. The movement of the waves is shown through the different shading in contains, and the lines it consists of. Another thing that involves the principles of design in the placement of the coral fish. They are evenly balanced out throughout the artwork so instead of looking like an easily contained, calm ocean day, the scene looks frantic and intriguing. My project didn't evolve dramatically, because, from the moment I first glanced at it, I saw an ocean wave. But, what did change for me was the little squiggle to the right of it, what is now the shark. I had no idea what I wanted to do with it, and after a while, I thought that could be developed into the sun. But while I working on the water with the coral fish, I started to see something else. I saw that the "U" shape looked almost like a mouth, and the "A" shape intruding the "U" looked like a tongue. And that's when I decided to switch to that plan instead.

The story behind this is exactly what it looks like. On an island somewhere tropical, where the waves strive to be breathtaking and the fish are bright and elegant, sometimes you have to be careful because even though it is a beautiful place, uninvited creatures can come and visit you. This doesn't relate to anything I've done in my current life, but I hope that one day I can go someplace like this somewhere, hopefully, Hawaii! If I had to choose something I was the proudest of, I would choose the shading of the waves, I love the effect it has and makes it look so much more realistic. During my time working on this project, I think the only part that was struggling was trying to come up with a subject for the "squiggle" right of the wave, but as I've mentioned before, I overcame this conflict and came up with the shark idea. If I could change my finishing product, I would put in the time to try to color the sky, since I completely forgot and would definitely make the piece stronger.
