Circle Project

"Simple"

9X9

In this assignment, you can see that I drew cross-sections of fruit. I chose to do this because when I thought of circles, I immediately thought of pieces of fruit, and I thought this would be good because I could incorporate lots of detail and precision. I also really love fruit, and I thought the simplicity of it could be visually interesting.

In this project I ultimately used charcoal. In my first draft, I only used graphite pencil and when I was done, I wasn't very satisfied because the shading and detail wasn't very distinctive, and I thought that since I had the time, I could retry with something bolder like charcoal.

In my art, there were many uses of texture and space. Each fruit had its own texture, and therefore it was crucial to make sure each individual one had their own unique features. Space was used for the feature of simplicity. Each piece of fruit was evenly spaced out from one another, and that really made the entire piece seem more put together and unifying each piece. I also used some principles of design like pattern and contrast. Pattern was used because each subject in my drawing had something in common, they were all fruit. I made sure that each one had something in common because I figured having some sort of pattern in my work of art would've been more attractive for the piece overall. I also used contrast when drawing details that included reflections, and even small seeds such as with the pomegranate or the kiwi. Without the contrast, it would have been a lot harder to distinguish what the subject I was attempting to draw is, and it would've been devastating for the overall work. As I went into detail about it in the second paragraph, my project was originally being done with just graphite. But when I was done, the detail and contrast with the shades lacked, and it wasn't very successful the first time. In this project, I honestly don't think any further steps need to be implied. I'm very satisfied overall with the simplicity of it, and I think that adding more would've been too complicated.
