In this final project, we first had to ask ourselves an inquiry question. Mine was "How can I use value to explore memory in my charcoal drawings?". Then, we had to create our first drawing or piece of art relating to, or answering our question. As you can see, in my drawing there is a girl looking at a memory of herself from the past through a mirror. This was created from charcoal, and incorporated value. I chose this question because I thought it was interesting, and I knew I could have fun with it.
In this project I used graphite pencils and white charcoal for the highlights. This included the highlights of the girl's hair, the mirror outline, and the peaks of the dress. I decided to do my last projects with charcoal pencils because I am very comfortable with the material, and I love how much value it can give to a piece of art.
As I mentioned before, I used value to create emphasis and contrast in my art. This can really help make a two-dimensional drawing appear as if it's three-dimensional, and that for me is very important. Areas you can see using value include the creases in the dress, the girl's hair, and the floor boards. This project didn't evolve too much, although I wasn't sure at first if I wanted it to be of the full body or just the faces of the girl and her younger-self. If I had more time, I would probably add more detail to the girl, as well as more events in the background as well as just more value all around.
