Sustained Investigation #2

For my inquiry question, "How can I use value to explore memory in my charcoal drawings" I decided to draw a picture of my dog Amber when she was a puppy. Amber was my dog, up until a couple years ago when she reached the age of 15. I thought it would be meaningful to have one of my last projects be of her when she was a puppy since she was a huge part of my families life.

For materials, I clearly used charcoal. Charcoal was my focus for these projects since I think charcoal is great for value, which is what I wanted to improve on towards the end of this semester. White charcoal also helped for the overall contrast of the piece, and highlighting some of the important elements of Amber.

Using charcoal, I used value to show contrast in my art. As I mentioned before, using white charcoal as well as different shades in charcoals really helped to show the value and realistic appearance in my dog. Areas like the face, and the fur are very important for these elements and principles. My project didn't evolve much, but If I had more time to work on it, I would probably go back and add detail to the background.
