Sustained Investigation #3

15X12''

For this last and final project, I had to incorporate my inquiry question: "How can I use value to explore memory in my charcoal drawings?" in one last way to show it. My first project was a girl looking at herself in the mirror, my second drawing was of my dog Amber when she was a puppy, and this project was a drawing of my brother and I when we were little. When I found this picture it brought back some nostalgia of when our family would go hiking a lot, and I thought it would be perfect for my last project.

It this drawing, I clearly used charcoal. As I've mentioned before, charcoal can demonstrate great value in my drawings, and I myself am very comfortable with the material, and I knew it would be perfect for these last drawings of the semester.

Using value and depth, I demonstrated emphasis and contrast. Using the darkest tone of charcoal, as well as the white charcoal to draw the path, helped to emphasize the main subject. My brother and I. We are both drawn using all of the shades I had available and not just dramatic contrast between white and black which definitely made us stand out. In this project, I first wanted to draw a different picture of my brother and I, but facing the front. But, I found a different picture of us with our arms around each other as we were walking down the path and thought that could be a great use a symbolism. That continuing in life, we always have each other. If I could go back, my next steps would be to add even more value to the two of us, and to really see how far I could go. Besides that, I am very satisfied with what I've created.
