Multimedia drawing

This assignment we had to do was called a multimedia drawing. Before we even started drawing the finished piece, we were told to select a black and white picture that contained a full range of value, print it, and grid it. This helped us for making sure our final piece was to scale, and we were using the right contrast of color. Then we used charcoal and ink to recreate the picture. The subject of my creation is Christmas lights, and I used mainly charcoal, with a few details of ink to draw it.

I used many elements of art when creating my piece. For example, value and texture. When creating my piece I obviously had to take value into consideration, since this was the main point of this small unit. You can see the value with each of the Christmas lights as it's going down the line, also the space around each of the lights is slightly brighter. There is also texture mixed into this drawing as well. The closest up light contains textures that show the viewers that this light is the focus, while the other lights are "blurrier" and are not in focus, all shown through the texture. There's also a clear use of design in this piece as well, such as pattern and contrast. Much like the value, the contrast in the piece is shown clearly with the white in each of the lightbulbs, and the dark background right next to it. The pattern is shown with the string of lights moving away from the viewer, but still keeping the same pattern of bright lights. Nothing in this piece changed dramatically, other than some of my other pieces.

This piece undoubtedly takes place in Christmas time, but there's no specific story that goes with this artwork. One way this relates to my life is that I actually took this picture at a Christmas party that I went to with my friends the weekend before Christmas, and this gives me good memories of that. I am very proud of the most focused Christmas bulb, I really love the glass end of it came out so satisfying. The part I struggled with the most was probably the wire connecting all of the lights, It was difficult to make the drawing seem as if the strings were overlapping, without it looking messy, but once I took the time to really plan it out, I think it turned out fine. If I had more time, I would consider adding more detail to this piece overall, for example, I could add something to the background of it to make the piece more interesting. To end on a good note, generally I think my piece turned out very well, and I am very satisfied with it.
