Abstract Shoe

The assignment we had to do was called an abstract shoe drawing. We were asked to use our contour shoe drawing and use a viewfinder to chose an area on that drawing that was the most interesting. We then drew this area on a separate piece of paper, and then we used the viewfinder to do it all over again. As a result, we have three separate drawings of our shoe getting closer and closer each time. Now, we chose one out of the three drawings to re-draw on another piece of paper. Then, we used our creativity to add color and make our piece abstract, and one of a kind. For my piece, I only used pencils and colored pencils.

I used many elements of art and principles of design when creating my Abstract Shoe such as color and line. For example, you can see in the sky, I used colors such as light pink, blue, and light black. Which are colors very pleasing to the eye and remind me of the universe. I also used color for the giraffe skin which helped the viewer clearly see that it was animal skin and not just a patch of material on a shoe. I also used lines in my drawing seen in rectangles colored blue to clearly see the difference between the black in the background and the blue. You can also see lines where my shoelaces would've been, now seen as trees. This tells us that the trees are completely separate from the "molten lava" in the background and don't mix together. The specific principles I used were contrast and pattern. For example, you can clearly see the contrast in the red and yellow section coming from the bottom of the page to the top. It is very pleasing to the viewer to see that "ombré" through the colors and not just separate colors seen through different obvious sections. On the other hand, there's also a clear use of pattern throughout this piece too. For example, in the blue blocks. There's a certain pattern that is seen with these rectangles like the way they are organized and arranged. I don't think my project evolved a lot from its original idea, but it was definitely difficult to come up with a design that was original yet relatable.

In this piece, there is actually a "story" or meaning to it. Although it's not obvious I like to think it represents earth in the solar system. The rectangles would be the water, the ombré in the middle would be the core of the earth, the two streaks going up the middle are trees, the light brown with dark brown spots would be animals, and the background is clearly outer space. This project doesn't relate directly to my life except for the fact that its earth and we obviously live here. I am most proud of the idea of my project out of this assignment. I also really liked how the piece came together, it worked out really well. As I've mentioned before, I struggled when coming up with an idea for the project, everything else was relatively smooth. If I could change one thing to my project, I would say I could've added more detail with the ombré.
