The assignment that we had to do was called the Blind Contour Drawing. We first got a piece of paper, and we're told to draw both our hands, and our face without looking. This is called a "Blind contour". After we did this, we were told that we needed to create an abstract scenario out of our three blind drawings, almost like the "squiggle drawing". We could use anything from watercolors to oil pascals as long as it involved the blind objects. The subject of my creation takes place in a dystopia, everything is dark and is powered by a malicious queen. For materials, I mainly used watercolors. But for small details like the abstract squares on top of the purple cloud, I used oil pascals.
I used elements such as color and texture to create a creepy vibe to the painting. Using colors like orange, red, and black, and textures like the black ink dripping down the page, you can feel the emotion of darkness coming off of the artwork. I also you principles such as pattern and contrast to create a realistic effect and to make it aesthetically pleasing. You can see this with all of the bold colors I chose for contrast and the background pattern of red and orange with lines of black in between. My artwork didn't change or evolve dramatically from its original idea, but things that did end up differently happened because of mistakes. For example, the dark purple cloud to the right wasn't originally supposed to be two pieces. and the black and purple lines around the queen were added on later too. Both of these because of mistakes.
The story of my artwork as I've mentioned before takes place in an evil dystopia, someplace dark. This obviously doesn't relate to anything I've done in my life, but I do enjoy dark humor, movies, and books. Out of everything that is going on in this picture, I really love how the queen turned out. All of her features came together nicely, like the color of her skin and her hair. Considering what she looked like before compared to it now, I think it was done well. While painting my artwork, I struggled with deciding what my hands should become. Since I only had a few days to finish this, I thought of something simple, like purple clouds. This brings me to my next and last point which is what I would have done differently to make my artwork stronger which is to obviously come up with a more original idea for what my hands should have become.
