Contour Drawings

The assignment we had to do a contour drawing. We were handed a piece of paper and were told to look at our hand holding an object and drawing it using only lines. After that, we had to do the same with our shoe, but with that, we had to draw three views. The subject of my creation was, of course, my own sneaker and hand like I just mentioned in the last sentence.

In this piece, I used both elements of art and principles of design to help make the piece "come together" or look realistic. Some elements I used in this artwork include texture and shape. For example, you can see that using lines, I created the illusion that in some areas, such as the shoelaces and the skin on my hand, appeared softer in texture than the earring and soul of my shoe. Using shapes, I showed realistic features of my drawing. For instance, the "mouth" part of my shoe is wider than the body of the shoe by using a wider oval shape to show that the shoe has been used. My project didn't change at all from its original idea since the assignment was to draw those very specific objects.

This artwork didn't represent a specific story or relate to my life like any of the others did, but if I had to choose something to be the proudest of in my work, I would have to say the amount of detail I put into the shoes. It easily took me three days straight to create all of the views of my sneaker, and this was because of the shoelaces. I struggled a lot while creating these because of how much they would move and overlap; but once I took the time to figure out the pattern, it was all worth it for the finishing product. If I could change anything in my artwork to make it stronger, I would say make the lines on my wrist less bold, and keep it realistic. And for my shoe, I would say add more detail to the bottom of the shoe.
