Road of Vines

" 11.5 x 1.5" x 14.5"

Bristol board, paper atlas, X-Acto knife, hot glue, adhesive, and tape

This art was independent studies #2 in 3D design, the inquiry question was, how can I show natural plants through unnatural materials.

The materials I used were Bristol board, paper atlas, X-Acto knife, hot glue, adhesive, and tape

For this work, I again wanted to connect a plant to an unnatural or industrialized material. In this art I choose the material of an Atlas, I choose this not only because it's paper and a very industrialized material but also because what I wanted to show is that man mad unnatural roads form very natural like vines. In this artwork I first had an idea to make a grove of trees with staked paper but decided against it when I tried it. After that, I found the idea of creating a sheet of vines out of a map in an atlas. the idea was quite time-consuming to be put into place due to me having to hand carve out the many highways and roads on this map of a piece of Europe. Once I had finished the cutting out part, I had to find out how I was going to create depth in the artwork, and decided on creating a block behind it out of paper. Then I attached them together using a spray on adhesive to make it uniform. Finally, I added small clear plastic loopholes in the back to be able to hang it up and attache it to walls.
