Sustained Investigation #3

Camera View

9"x 12"

graphite, ink pen, gel pen, colored pencil and charcoal on drawing paper

In the artwork, I was trying to show how us as humans and people are able to see landscapes and how our experiences seeing landscapes are typically through screens. I also wanted to show how beautiful places and scenes are captured by cameras and freely distributed through digital media.

This art was independent studies #3, the overarching essential question for my independent studies is, how do I change perception and perspective change in landscape drawings.

The materials I used were graphite, ink pen, gel pen, colored pencil and charcoal.

For this IS number three, I really tried to embrace the effect that modern technology has on how we view the world. I really wanted to show how humans are at the point where beautiful scene rare to see in the past are now available. I got this idea by searching landscapes on Google, the idea came to me once I saw a photo of a camera. Once the idea had come in, I started the research on what type of camera I wanted to represent (the camera was the Sony Alpha 1600) Then, I started off sketching out the camera and filtering out some detail that I felt were unheeded. After that, I when over the sketch with black pen to clean up the lines. Proceeding that I had to tape up everything except the screen since I would be using charcoal. Finally, the tape was finished, so I sketch out the general shape of the mountains and shaded them in. To finish off the artwork, I added color to the sky and added the stars to the sky.
